Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.
Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
In her first stand-alone teen novel, the New York Times-bestselling author dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Hello!
It’s been a while since I have been here with a book review. It has been quite a month of scary movies, but let’s get back to some more fun content. Also hopefully by the time you are reading this we are onto some less cynical news and in need some lightheartedness as we wind down the last few months of the year.
While you were reading all the posts on scary movies and taking in the all the content to get you in a fall mood. I was on the other side trying to get my reading back into shape. Since it took a major hit this year with everything happening , but hopefully we are finally on the upswing and you are still getting hit with lots of great content.

As you read from the synopsis, we are here to talk about Heartless by Marissa Meyer. This Alice in Wonderland retelling regarding the Queen of Hearts sat on my shelf since it was published and talked about in 2016. I have started and stopped this book a number of times before this before finally finishing it this year. It’s not the book’s fault I promise you! The intrigue on the book was definitely interesting, but to say that I am a distracted reader is probably the worst thing for an author to know. I’m glad that I finally hunkered down and read this book to the last page. My love for Alice in Wonderland is strong, but not as strong as my love for Harry Potter. ( I’ll talk about my love for Harry Potter in another post or something)

I loved how you are immediately thrown into the world of Wonderland with the kingdom of Hearts where anything can happen. When you first meet Cath, she has used her dreams to grow a lemon tree in her room and her fanciful dreams of opening a bakery with her best friend MaryAnn are hopeful and boundless. I won’t spoil the ending of the book, although if you are familiar with Alice in Wonderland you can probably deduce the ending. I would encourage you to read this book because you will be intrigued at the mysterious twists and turns it takes.

I am also interested in reading more of Marissa Meyer’s work. Let me know if you have read this book and what you thought of it. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

See you again soon.

Scaretober-Movie Review: The Witches (1990)

10 / 30 / 2010 / 25 / 20
scaretober 2020

Hello!
Welcome to the thirtieth of October! I hope that your year has been going well. If you have been with me a while, you will know that every year I attempt to watch a lot of scary movies for October mostly to cure myself of my wariness of scary movies. When I started this series several years ago, I could barely sit through a scary movie to save my life. Now since doing this series I can say that I am much better. Last year, I decided to attempt to add books to this series. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up completing this series last year, but I have high hopes for this year 😉

Today’s movie in case you haven’t figured it out is Witches starring Angelica Huston. Last year I read the book written by Roald Dahl, you can read that review here. It was also announced recently that Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer will star in a remake of this movie, which may be out by the time this post goes live on HBO Max. ( I know so many streaming services, how 2020!)

The movie stays pretty true to Roald Dahl’s original book in which Luke’s grandma ends up caring for Luke after his parents are killed in a car accident. Luke’s grandma begins telling Luke stories about her encounters with witches and how to identify them. After a strange encounter with “diabetes”, the doctor recommends a seaside holiday for Luke’s grandma. Luke and his grandma arrive at the hotel and find that there is a convention also happening at the hotel. Luke wanders the hotel and mets another child named Bruno, who is also staying at the hotel with his parents. Luke’s grandmother begins to sense that something strange is happening at the hotel, but can’t figure out what.

I won’t give away the whole movie, since even though this movie isn’t scary. I thought that this movie was fun and definitely a good Halloween movie to watch. I definitely enjoyed the movie just as much as the book, even though the ending of the movie is slightly different than the book. I look forward at some point watching the new movie and seeing how it compares to the book.

I hope that you enjoyed this post and that you will stay tuned to more movie reviews that will be coming soon as we round out this edition of Scaretober. See you soon!

Scaretober-Movie Review: Evil Dead ( 1981)

10 / 29 / 2010 / 25 / 20
scaretober 2020

Hello!
Welcome to the twenty-ninth day of October!

Today’s movie in case you haven’t figured it out is Evil Dead written and directed by Sam Raimi, starring Bruce Campbell. I mostly watched this because it is one of Matt’s favorite movies and he claims that this was part of the original horror movie genre.

Here’s the general plot of the story, a group of five friends decide to go camping in the woods at a remote cabin. Four members of the group make up two couples, all of which will soon become a horror trope. After they get to the cabin, the group separates and spends sometime looking around. Cheryl, the artist of the group, begins sketching the wall clock and after a bit a force take over her and begins sketching the trapdoor in the floor. The whole act terrifies Cheryl. A while later the group is eating dinner when the trap door, that Cheryl drew earlier, opens. The guys in the group decide to go down and explore the cellar and find objects in a room set off the main room of the cellar. The guys bring the objects back up to the girls and begins playing the tape recorder. On the tape recorder you hear the previous occupant of the cabin talking about his experience and reading from a book. Cheryl gets freaked out once again and after that demands to be taken into town to stay the night. Ash volunteers to take her, but once they get near the bridge they crossed over initially, they find out that the bridge has been destroyed and they are trapped for the night. Slowly the story begins to devolve from there.

I won’t spoil the entire movie for you because if you are really into horror movies, maybe you will like it. I found the movie a bit played out. Perhaps I should have watched this movie before some of the others in this series this year, but I wasn’t impressed. Matt also told me later that this movie later leaned into the horror funny part, which the director and actors learned that the audience liked. There are also several more movies in this franchise, but as I said I wasn’t impressed. I suppose that there are certain aspects of the movie that were good and are definite parts which you could see why the genre struggled for so long.

I hope that you enjoyed this post and that you will stay tuned to more movie reviews that will be coming soon as we round out this edition of Scaretober. See you soon!

Scaretober: Movie Review-Red Dragon

10 / 28 / 209 / 30 / 20
scaretober 2020

Hello!
Welcome to the twenty-eighth day of October!

Today’s movie in case you haven’t figured it out is Red Dragon starring Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins. It was just a year of big horror movies around here because if you recall earlier this month I finally made it through and reviewed Silence of the Lambs for you, feel free to check out that post before you read this. I know that there are several parts to the Hannibal Lector story and I eventually would love to see them all, but right now we are still here.

Red Dragon in case you haven’t heard about it is the prequel to Silence of the Lambs in which Dr. Lector at the beginning of the movie is still a free man and is a famed psychologist who is working with an FBI profiler, Will Graham to figure out who the serial killer of the current string of murders are. One night, Will comes to Dr. Lector’s home with a theory and while still there put together that Dr. Lector is the serial killer that the FBI has been searching for. Will and Dr. Lector struggle, but Dr. Lector is arrested by police and eventually put in the psych ward of a hospital as we know. Will is seriously injured in the fight and takes months to recover during which he leaves the FBI and moves his family to Florida.

Here’s where the bulk of the story begins and I promise I won’t spoil the ending. Will Graham is tracked down for his help with a serial killer case that has been occurring up and down the East Coast. They insist that Will is the only person that can get inside the killer’s head. Will after some prodding takes the case, but also admits to needing Dr. Lector’s help and begins to visit him asking him for advice on the case. It isn’t long before Will and the FBI discover that the serial killer and Dr. Lector have been corresponding to the extent it puts Will’s family endanger. While all this is going on we see glimpses of the serial killer through his fascination with the Dr. Lector case and his interactions with his co-workers.

This movie definitely gave some insight as to the animosity that Dr. Lector has toward being held captive for his crimes and to find someone his equal. If you have seen Silence of the Lambs I would definitely recommend watching this movie for more of Dr. Lector.

I hope that you enjoyed this post and that you will stay tuned to more movie reviews that will be coming soon as we round out this edition of Scaretober. See you soon!

Scaretober:Movie Review-Carrie (2002)

10 / 27 / 209 / 30 / 20
scaretober 2020

Hello!
Welcome to the twenty-seventh day of October!

Today’s movie was Carrie. This reimagining was done in 2002, if you are interested in hearing my thought on Carrie 1976, you can read it here. While I enjoyed the original movie it is always interesting to see how another generation sees the movie and does its own interpretation of it. I am also interested in seeing the 2013 version of the movie starring Chloe Grace Moretz.

The main story of Carrie is the same as before with Carrie being the strange outcast girl in high school with an overly strict religious mom. I won’t go through the whole story since you can read about it in my original review if you haven’t already seen the movie. The ending of this movie was quite a bit different from the first, which I think was meant to make the movie more of a feel good movie instead of a horror movie. There are still very horrible parts to the movie, but certain elements of this ending were considerably different than the original.

While I still enjoyed the story of Carrie and appreciated some of the pyrotechnics in the movie and other special effects. I found that the movie lost element of scariness when it was translated into color, since the original movie was in black and white also since the ending was considerably different I did think that took away from the horror factor of the movie. Overall it was good.

I hope that you are enjoyed this post. If you have seen this movie feel free to leave your thoughts on how it stacks up to the original. If you like scary movies feel free to check out some of the other movie reviews in this series and stay tuned for more in the last few days of October. See you soon!

I finished my third book of the year so far. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 The short diary excerpts made me want to keep turning pages to find out what happens next. I loved the plot twist, though a part of me felt kind of sad for the mother in the end.😉 I wouldn't mind reading a follow up to this book to find out what happens to Maddy & Olly in the future. A more in depth review in on the blog now. #linkinbio

Reads a bit like Birds of Prey the movie where Harley Quinn is narrating the story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars I also thought the sketchy style of art was an interesting twist as compared to the rest of the books. Would recommend although it feels like it could use a sequel 😉 #jamiereads #52books #bookblogger #bookstagram #❤️
