Find your magic
For the Owens family, love is a curse that began in 1620, when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man.
Hundreds of years later, in New York City at the cusp of the sixties, when the whole world is about to change, Susanna Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique. Difficult Franny, with skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, shy and beautiful Jet, who can read other people’s thoughts, and charismatic Vincent, who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk.
From the start Susanna sets down rules for her children: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic. And most importantly, never, ever, fall in love. But when her children visit their Aunt Isabelle, in the small Massachusetts town where the Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they uncover family secrets and begin to understand the truth of who they are. Back in New York City each begins a risky journey as they try to escape the family curse.
The Owens children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart. The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in Practical Magic, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy.

Hello!
Welcome to the Fifteenth day of October! I hope that your year has been going well. If you have been with me a while, you will know that every year I attempt to watch a lot of scary movies for October mostly to cure myself of my wariness of scary movies. When I started this series several years ago, I could barely sit through a scary movie to save my life. Now since doing this series I can say that I am much better. Last year, I decided to attempt to add books to this series. Unfortunately, I didn’t end up completing this series last year, but I have high hopes for this year 😉

This book was part of the recommended reads for the Paper & Glam book club read back in 2019, but alas I didn’t get to it then. I was finally able to read the second book in the series, which you can read the review on that here. I was hoping to also review this book during this series, since it went so well together and after reading the other book I couldn’t wait to spend more time with the Owens family.

I loved that Alice Hoffman chose to do a prequel to Practical Magic first because it gave me a better perspective on Franny & Jet and life that they led before they came to be the aunts that would raise Gillian & Sally. It was interesting also see how the small town in Massachusetts changed over the years.

I would definitely recommend you read this book if you are looking for a fun Halloween read that isn’t too scary. I would also recommend this book if you have read Practical Magic and want to spend more time with the Owens family. Recently another book in this series was released and I can’t wait to read it since it goes back to the beginning and we learn about Maria Owens.

I hope that you have been enjoying the content so far and that you’ll stick around for more content that will come throughout the rest of the month. See you soon!

The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel from New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman.
For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town. Gillian and Sally have endured that fate as well: as children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape.
One will do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they share will bring them back—almost as if by magic...

This was a Paper & Glam book club read back in 2019, but alas I didn’t get to it then. Luckily, I was able to find this book and it’s prequel book at a local used book seller for pretty cheap, so I was finally able to read it. I was glad to hear that there was a book to a movie that I have loved so much and is so much fun to watch this time of year.

I loved that the book has a bit more depth than the movie and gives a bit more background on the characters and why they are in the situations they are in. Don’t get me wrong I love that the movie just thrusts you into situations , but I do also a lovely background story. I also loved reading about some of the other characters, which I thought in a way gave the story more depth. I would love to see how the story continues with Antonia and Kylie, but even if we never get that book that would be fine to.

I would definitely recommend you read this book if you are looking for a fun Halloween read that isn’t too scary. I would also recommend this book if you loved the movie with Sandra Bullock just as much as I did. I hope that you’ll keep an eye on this space for more blog content coming soon 😉 See you soon!

Hey!

I’m back yet another book review, which I suppose is good for me finally decluttering some of the books that have sat on my shelf forever. I’m not against buying and keeping books, but I am a recovering shopaholic and bookstore junkie and buying material things for the sake of buying things isn’t good. All those thoughts if you really want to know will be for another post or another conversation.

The book we are reviewing today is Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. I was interested in reading the book after I saw the movie trailer, but never actually got around to seeing the movie in 2005/2006ish. Here’s the trailer in case you want to see it:

I loved the book and came away with some good thought provoking quotes. I would be interested in seeing the movie, but it’s not on any streaming service currently, so I guess I’ll wait it out. Also the book is part of a 3 book series of which I hope to get to the rest in the future.

Have you read this book or seen the movie? What other books have you been reading lately? I feel like time is flying by so fast these days though my reading has been in quite a slump this year. So we read on. I hope to see you again soon in another post!

A novel about holding on, letting go, and learning to love again.
Now in paperback, the endearing novel that captured readers' hearts and introduced a fresh new voice in women's fiction Cecelia Ahern.
Holly couldn't live without her husband Gerry, until the day she had to. They were the kind of young couple who could finish each other's sentences. When Gerry succumbs to a terminal illness and dies, 30-year-old Holly is set adrift, unable to pick up the pieces. But with the help of a series of letters her husband left her before he died and a little nudging from an eccentric assortment of family and friends, she learns to laugh, overcome her fears, and discover a world she never knew existed.
The kind of enchanting novel with cross-generational appeal that comes along once in a great while, PS, I Love You is a captivating love letter to the world!

Hey…
I know that it has been a minute since I have been here, but I just finished another book and I wanted to review it for you. This was a Paper & Glam book club read for February , which I didn’t get around to reading to until now.

I had seen this movie when it came out in 2007. If you haven’t seen it yet, it stars Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler it’s really good. I would highly recommend that you have a box of tissues near you because you will cry quite a bit through the movie.

The book is quite a bit different from the movie, so if you have watched the movie first you won’t be spoiled by what happens in the the book. You will definitely love the book hopefully just as much as the movie. If you haven’t read the synopsis above make sure that you check that out.

I would definitely recommend this book if you are into more modern love stories and yet not want something super mushy or something too lit-erotica.

I would love to hear if you have read this book and what you thought about it. This has definitely been a tough reading year for me with everything that has been going on, but hopefully I am finally turning a corner. Let me know what you have been reading lately and what you would recommend.

See you soon !

Black Lantern Book 1

8 / 6 / 207 / 29 / 20

Book and Prints received in the package

Hello!
I’m back with yet another book review. This review actually should have gone up a couple of weeks ago, but life has been pretty crazy. As you can see from the above picture this is going to be a view of the graphic novel Black Lantern Vol. 1 created by Chris Bodily.

I was able to read this in one sitting because that’s what usually happens with graphic novels with me. Matt was also able to sit down and read it within one sitting. This is Chris’s first graphic novel he’s the artist and his wife Chelsea Maki did the story. The graphic novel is published by Ghost Machine Publishing.

The basic synopsis of the story is
“As freelance paranormal investigators, the Burnwood and Blackwell Agency are no strangers to the supernatural. Edgar is a tattooed jack ‘o lantern with a haunted past, Fiona is a rockabilly witch learning to master her abilities., and Julius is a talking black cat with a thing for ghosts. But when a clandestine priory comes after Edgar for a dark ritual, the three will have to embark on an arcane adventure into the occult in order to solve the mystery. With Halloween fast approaching will any of them make it out alive.”

The first book is definitely intriguing enough to make you want to keep going and it has been said that there will be a second volume coming out. I love the Halloween elements and the spooky nature of the book. Julius the talking black cat was definitely my favorite character in the book with his sarcasm. If you aren’t into witches, zombies, haunted houses, the occult or any of those things you probably won’t end up liking this book.

Here are some of Matt’s thoughts: The crazy supernatural things were treated practically and the idea of a blue collar work being surrounded by supernatural made it feel like Hellboy and I liked Hellboy. I would also like to know more about how Edward is kept alive.

Feel free to pickup this book at Chris’s website or Ghost Machine Publishing. I’ll definitely keep you updated as more volumes of this series come out and other work from Chris.

*This review is not sponsored, but the artist/creator Chris is a friend. I did purchase this book to support him, but he included the extras.

Reads a bit like Birds of Prey the movie where Harley Quinn is narrating the story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars I also thought the sketchy style of art was an interesting twist as compared to the rest of the books. Would recommend although it feels like it could use a sequel 😉 #jamiereads #52books #bookblogger #bookstagram #❤️
