Today’s movie is Monsters.
This is yet another Netflix recommendation and if you have been following me for a while you will remember how much drama Netflix caused. Still we move on, don’t worry I have more movies coming that are better, I think.
Here’s the rundown on the movie: This 2010 British movie opens with text talking about NASA finding the possibility of alien life and bringing back samples. The space craft that brought the samples back exploded and the samples were strewn over Mexico. Flash forward several years to the US and Mexico government trying to contain the creatures. In the movie what appears to be the next day a man named Andrew travels to a hospital in San Jose, Central America to find a girl named Sam, who is his employers daughter. Andrew is given orders to take Sam to the coast so that she can get back to the US. Sam calls her dad to reassure him that she’s ok and then she and Andrew get on a train to the coast. Andrew actually admits to Sam that even though he’s a photographer he hasn’t had his big break yet. The pair is told to get off the train since the track is taken out half way to the coast. They walk for awhile and then are taken in by a local who tells them that the ferries stop running in 2 days. The pair stays the night and then makes it to the ferry dock the next day. The official at the docks tells them that there is only one seat left on the ferry and that it costs $5000 and that the last ferry leave the next morning. The pair stays the night in the town and things get a little weird between them. Andrew stays out a little longer and ends up sleeping with a local who robs him. By the time Andrew and Sam get back to the dock the ferry has already left and there are no longer tickets available. The official tells them that they could go to the infected zone for money, and so Sam pawns her engagement ring to get them passage.
I will keep to my promise and not spoil the entire movie for you. I can say that this is one of those forward backward movies where the director shows you the end, except that you won’t know that its the end until the end of the movie. Overall, I wasn’t impressed with the movie. You never really see the alien creature and nearly half the movie is shot during the night. I suppose that I understand that the alien creatures only come out at the night, but at least use night vision. I would recommend this movie only if you were interested in aliens , but overall it is not an impressive alien movie.
