Scaretober-Movie Review: Carrie

10 / 10 / 138 / 13 / 18

Hey!
For the month of October I’ve dubbed it Scaretober in which I will be blogging every day in October. No, it’s not just random blogs in October but specifically scary movies movies. I’m definitely not one of those girls that enjoys scary movies by any means in fact this is a HUGE challenge for me since I’m such a wimp when it comes down to it. Some of the movies reviewed will be super scary and others will just be 90’s cheesy scary compared to today’s standards. There will be a few days during this month that I will be putting up more than one posts, because sometimes you can’t hold any awesome back when it comes to the blog.

Today’s movie is Carrie (1976)

Link

I included the original version of this movie because by some this is hailed to be the scariest movie of all time and we learned from the Scream series the remake is just not the same as the original. Now let’s get into it, Carrie White is a high school senior who is not only bullied at school but in the small town where she lives because her mother is a super Christian and believes that sin is everywhere and that everyone needs to be converted and saved as well. At the beginning of the movie we find Carrie at school and find her in the locker room after gym class and she freaks out because she gets her period for the first time and has no idea what is going on. Her classmates chose this moment to pick on her and not help her. It is also during this incident that she figures out that she might have powers. Carrie’s mother finds out what has happened and is convinced that her daughter is now being possessed by the devil and she needs to pray more. The next day Carrie researches  telekinetic powers and finds that there are a few books on it and that it is possible to control it.  Also during that day Carrie’s classmates are given a week of detention for not helping Carrie yesterday and if they do not complete their detention they will not be able to go to prom among the other punishment. One of the popular girls, Chris, thinks that the detention is stupid and walks away. She tries to convince her friends to come with her, but they refuse. Sue, one of Chris’s friends decides to be nice to Carrie and let her have at least one nice memory in her life, so she asks her boyfriend Tommy to take Carrie to the prom and convince her that it is real. When Tommy asks Carrie to the prom she can’t believe what is happening to her and says no because she thinks that it is a joke. Mrs. Collins, the gym teacher, finds Carrie hiding out and takes pity on her. Mrs. Collins finds Sue and Tommy and tries to get to the bottom of what happen and they both insist that Tommy taking Carrie to the prom is real and not a joke. Tommy shows up to Carrie’s house and convinces Carrie to accept the invitation to the prom and she does. Carrie tells her mom all the events that have occurred in the last 2 days and her mom gets very upset and is now convinced that she has become possessed by the devil. Chris is so upset about not being able to go to the prom and blames Carrie about it that she puts in motion a terrible joke on Carrie that will be carried out on prom night. The night of the prom arrives and Carrie gets ready managing to convince her mom that everything will be ok and she will be home early. Carrie and Tommy is having a nice time at prom when they find out that they have been nominated for prom king and queen and decide to vote for themselves. Meanwhile at home, Carrie’s mom is going crazy trying to figure out a way to save herself. Carrie and Tommy win Prom Queen and King. In the massive final arc of the storyline Sue has snuck out to the prom to see if Carrie is having a good time and is caught and thrown out just before she can tell Mrs. Collins about the prank. After Sue is thrown out, a bucket of pig’s blood is dumped on Carrie and then Tommy hits his head on the bucket and falls to the ground. After this happens the crowd erupts in laughter and then Carrie freaks out and is convinced that her mom is right about the prom after all. Carrie uses her telekinetic powers to seal the doors of the gym and set it on fire killing everyone inside, while she gets away. Just as she is walking home, she is nearly run over by Chris and her boyfriend, but they manage to avoid her but not before Carrie sees them in the car and uses her telekinetic powers to turn their car into a fiery mess. Carrie gets to her house and finds that her mom has lit every candle in prayer, she goes to take a bath and get rid of the evidence. Afterward, her mother tells Carrie the story about her conception and then stabs Carrie. Carrie uses her telekinetic powers to kill her mom and then in a fit of forgiveness pulls the knives out of her and takes her to the prayer room. In the process of  moving her taking her to the prayer room the house begins to crumble around them trapping both Carrie and her mom in the house.  Sue is the only surviving member of the class and has been in a restless state of sleep since the incident. The movie shows her going to Carrie’s grave to put flowers and what appears to be Carrie’s arm reaches out to grab her. Sue awakens in her mother’s arm from what appears to be a very real nightmare.

After seeing this movie, I agree that this might be the scariest movie I have seen to date. Sissy Spacek does a good job of playing Carrie White the poor bullied girl. John Travolta also plays a bit part in the movie, but since he is only in a few scenes he won’t get recognition for it as much. I have not seen the remake but if I can sleep through the night and give you another review for Scaretober tomorrow we will know that this movie is still worth the scare after all these years.

Today’s movie is Disturbing Behavior

This movie’s big name stars are Katie Holmes , James Marsden and Nick Stahl. In the opening sequence of the movie Gavin Strict, Nick Stahl, on one of his night walks witnesses the star quarterback, Trent go crazy at makeout point killing his girlfriend and a cop. The other cop tells Trent to go home and takes care of the mess, much to Gavin’s horror. The next day Steve Clark, James Marsden, and his family move to Cradle Bay, Crescent Island in order to recover from the death of his older brother, Alan. On his first day Steve thinks that Cradle Bay High is just like any other high school with its cliques, he even meets Gavin Strict and UV who give him the rundown on each of the cliques. Later that week he meets Dr. Edward Caldecott the school’s guidance counselor who is also an advisor for the Blue Ribbons and encourages Steve to join the Blue Ribbons also. After the meeting, Steve leaves and meets Gavin’s friend Rachel, Katie Holmes, in the parking lot and later that night watch another Blue Ribbon go crazy in public. It is then that Rachel enlightens Steve about Gavin’s theory about an evil force taking over Cradle Bay. The next day Gavin introduces Steve to Mr. Newbury the town’s idiot sauvant.  Steve stops by the local yogurt shop on his way home and runs into the Blue Ribbons where he chats with them for a bit before Gavin decides to take him on an excursion to prove his theory. Gavin’s excursion takes him to observe a Blue Ribbon parent meeting in which Gavin finds out that he is the next victim of the Blue Ribbons. Gavin puts a fuss about having to go home, but shows up the next day having become a Blue Ribbon to the bane of his friends existence. Steve runs into Mr. Newbury again and finds that Mr. Newbury is not as dumb as he appears. That night Steve heads home only to find Lorna, head cheerleader of the Blue Ribbons in his house. They chat for a bit before Lorna goes crazy and needs a trip to the emergency room, where the audience finds out that the person behind all of this is Mr. Caldecott. The next day Rachel finds a DVD Gavin made for her and later that day calls Steve over to show him Gavin’s DVD and Mr. Caldecott’s employment records that she has dug up. Mr. Caldecott’s employment records show that he was working on mind control at a psych facility in Bishop Flats. Steve and Rachel discover that he worked on his daughter there. In arc of the movie Steve goes home to get his younger sister, Lindsay and find that his parents have sold him out to the program. The Blue Ribbons kidnap Steve and Rachel and try to convert them but they manage to get away from Cradle Bay  with the help of UV and Mr. Newbury.  At the end of the movie just when you think all the mind control students are dead, Gavin Strict appears a few years later as a student teacher in a school that is not Cradle Bay.

I was definitely scared by this movie and could not believe that Gavin had survived. I  would definitely recommend this one as a scary movie not to mention that it has a pretty good soundtrack for the late 90s. I hope to see you again tomorrow with another Scaretober post. Sorry that these have been getting up so late lately, I’ve been busy.

Scaretober: Movie Review: The Faculty

Today’s movie is The Faculty

This movie bodes an all-star cast that include the likes of Usher, Josh Hartnet, Selma Hayak, Jon Stewart and Elijah Wood just to name a few. The movie is set in Ohio because if you were aliens and you were going to invade planet earth wouldn’t you want to sneak in the back way instead of going through the front door, or at least that’s what the movie claims. At the beginning of the film Coach Willis is just finishing up football practice when he gets attacked by an unknown person, later that night after a faculty meeting has let out Coach Willis as already attacked Mrs. Olsen and converted her and then proceeds to attack Principal Drake much to her dismay. The next day at school you see Casey, Elijah Wood, being attacked by a group of jocks while people pretend not to notice. Stan, the captain of the football team tells his cheerleader/ newspaper editor girlfriend, Deliah that he wants to quit the football team and concentrate on his studies. Deliah tells him not to disrupt the social standings. Marybeth, a new girl at school attempts to befriend the school goth, Stokely several times. Casey spends lunchtime alone in the football stands and is just about to head back into school when he discovers an organism on the edge of the football field. He takes his finding to his Biology teacher Professor Furlong and he says that it is a species not of this world. After an encounter with a bit of water that hydrates it, they through it into the aquarium that hydrates the creature more and then it transforms it into 2 creatures that attack Professor Furlong. Stan confesses to Coach Willis that he wants to quit the football team and the Coach’s reaction surprises him after he takes a shower where he has a run in with an older teacher, Mrs. Brommel.  Later on Casey and Deliah are doing research for the school newspaper in the faculty room when Coach Willis and Mrs. Olsen appear. The Coach and Mrs. Olsen talk about what has been happening nonchalantly when Nurse Harper walks in. Nurse Harper is attacked before Casey and Deliah’s very eyes and they also find Mrs. Bromel who is now dead. Casey tries to tell Principal Drake and his parents what has been happening to no success later that day. Casey’s parents are now convinced that he is on drugs and need to see a shrink. The following day the school is now nearly completely infected thanks to Nurse Harper’s help. Casey finds Deliah the next day and tries to convince her, Stan, Stokely, and a few others that their school is now filled with aliens. While they are having this conversation Professor Furlong walks in and won’t let them leave. They eventually have to kill Professor Furlong with Zeke’s caffeine shots. The group of students figure out a way to save the town and the world with Zeke’s homemade caffeine shots all of this involves killing the alien queen. The group finally figures out that the alien queen is Marybeth and there’s a final showdown between Casey, Zeke and the aliens. Casey saves the day and kills the alien queen nearly killing himself in the process.  A month later in the movie it says that life in Ohio has changed, but the story is still holding the media’s fascination with aliens.

This movie was much easier to watch now that I’m older. Although an invasion of the body snatchers scenario would creep me out. I did read several reviews on the movie that touted that this was simply an 1.5 hour Tommy Hilfiger ad. It was interesting to watch what scared people in the 90s and what’s scares people now. I think that as a society we are definitely into more blood and guts now. Well, I hope that I see you tomorrow for another Scaretober post!

Scaretober-Movie Review: Godzilla King of the Monsters

Today’s movie is Godzilla King of Monsters

Link

First off I would like to state that this movie was made in 1956 and is shot in black and white in case you were not aware. The movie is narrated by a reporter named Steve Martin who has stopped in Tokyo during the time Godzilla surfaced. The story begins from the attack on Tokyo and then rewinds to tell you everything that happened up to the point and then shows you the ending, which is always interesting concept in movies. The night Steve arrives in Tokyo a ship was attack by a flash and light and then disappeared into the ocean, when several rescue ships go looking for the ship they are also swallowed into the ocean. Steve reports to his boss in Chicago that 8 ships have disappeared since the first incident with no survivors living long enough to tell the story of what happened. Steve is invited along with several scientists to visit a nearby island where the ships have been disappearing to see what the natives know. While on the island Steve finds out that the natives say a monster they have been offering gifts to in the past has finally surfaced. When the scientists do their research they find that the creature is radioactive and has contaminated everywhere he has touched.  During one of the research missions the monster surfaces and terrorizes the island and the natives call it Godzilla. The scientists and Steve return to Tokyo and report their findings as a creature from the Jurassic age being awaken because of the hydrogen bomb testing. Godzilla then appears in Tokyo harbor but leaves before much destruction is caused. During this time, Steve’s friend Dr. Serazawa has found a way to save the world, but has only told Emiko because he does not want anyone to use his research for evil. Godzilla surfaces out of Tokyo Bay again and terrorizes Tokyo while Steve gives a play by play recording to his boss in Chicago. After the devastation Emiko finds Steve in the hospital and reveals to him that Dr. Serazawa has a means for stopping Godzilla. Steve asks her to convince him to use it to save the world. After much dilemma, Dr. Serazawa finally agrees to save the world but not before destroying his research. Dr. Serazawa saves the world, Godzilla is defeated and Dr. Serazawa also takes his own life in the process.

This is a very 1950s movie I’m sorry to say. It is good by those standards and it was worth watching, but aside from that not scary at all. I’m not even quite sure why I was afraid of Godzilla when I was younger perhaps it is because of the reputation surrounding the legend. Well, hopefully I will see you again tomorrow with a much better movie review for Scaretober.  Also let me know in the comments if you would like to watch the rest of the Godzilla series.

Scaretober-Movie Review: Scream 2

Today’s movie is Scream 2.

I had not intend on putting up this review so soon, but I ran out of time today to do a proper review for another movie. If you have read my previous review on Scream  you will know where the story begins. If you have not go ahead and read that one first because I’m actually planning on covering the whole Scream series during Scaretober. This movie picks up about a year or so into the future of Sidney’s life. Sidney Prescott, still played by Neve Campbell, is now in college in California. She wishes that she could leave the memories of the previous years behind her, but she can’t because Gale Weathers’ book turned movie is now the hottest thing in Hollywood.  The movie opens at a midnight showing of Stab (Gale Weathers’  book turned movie) where Ghostface kills an unknown couple. Sidney is creeped out and runs to find Randy a surviving member of the horrors of Woodsboro the year before and he insists that it is not happening at first, but after a third murder happens and Dewey shows up he is convinced that he is now in a sequel to a scary movie and spouts off the rules of sequels. Also at the beginning of this movie you find out that Cotton, the man Sidney accused of killing her mom last year, has been released and is trying to get his life back together.  Ghostface terrorizes Sidney and her friends once again and a few make heroic escapes with death. Randy dies in this movie  🙁 The final showdown is begins when Sidney is being taken to a safe house by some officers and the car stops leaving all the occupants to be attacked by Ghostface. Just as Sidney and her friend manage to escape death by Ghostface and car accident, Ghostface disappears from the car, but manages to reappear in the street moments later killing Sidney’s friend. Sidney runs to the theater building, where Ghostface reveals that it is Mickey, a crazed film student and Ms. Loomis, Billy’s mom, acting under revenge and fame to conquer the world. Cotton saves Sidney’s life and gets to start his life over.

This movie was definitely suspenseful and a bit scary to say the least. The star studded cast of Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Josh Jackson just to name a few off hand, only adds to the power of the movie at the time. The ending was a bit predictable with the duo killers, but finding each other in a psycho chatroom on the internet added to the twist. Some of the killing scenes in this movie were a bit better in this one than the last and the movie within a movie is a bit different. I will be covering the rest of the Scream series in the weeks to come. See you with another review tomorrow.

This post went up on the blog yesterday, but here' This post went up on the blog yesterday, but here's a short synopsis with less words. Interesting book. Reads a bit like Birds of Prey the movie where Harley Quinn is narrating the story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars I also thought the sketchy style of art was an interesting twist as compared to the rest of the books. Would recommend although it feels like it could use a sequel 😉 #jamiereads #52books #bookblogger #bookstagram #❤️
