Scaretober-Movie Review:Pet Semetary

10 / 5 / 134 / 11 / 20

Hey!
For the month of October I’ve dubbed it Scaretober in which I will be blogging every day in October. No, it’s not just random blogs in October but specifically scary movies movies. I’m definitely not one of those girls that enjoys scary movies by any means in fact this is a HUGE challenge for me since I’m such a wimp when it comes down to it. Some of the movies reviewed will be super scary and others will just be 90’s cheesy scary compared to today’s standards. There will be a few days during this month that I will be putting up more than one posts, because sometimes you can’t hold any awesome back when it comes to the blog.

Today’s movie is The Pet Semetary
Pet Sematary (1989)
Link

This movie is based on a novel of the same title by Stephen King, the king of scare. A family the Creeds moves into a house on the outskirts of a small mountain town. The house lies on a rather straight stretch of road that truckers speed through regularly. Their neighbor, Judd is a nice old man who tells them about the path to the Pet Semetary and other stories about the town. One day, Dr. Creed is at work and tries to save a Pascow’s life ( boy hit by a truck) and fails. Dr. Creed is alone with Pascow when his soul is taken from his body, but not before he has a chance to leave Dr. Creed with some haunting words. Pascow’s death would be the first in a series of 4 major deaths in the movie. The next person to die is the Creeds maid who hangs herself because she can’t take anymore pain in her life. The next death in the movie is the family cat, Church, who is hit by a speeding truck. Dr. Creed is a bit devastated that he will have to break this news to his daughter. Judd says that there is a way that his daughter may not ever have to know and takes Dr. Creed to an Indian burial ground beyond the Pet Semetary.  The next day Church comes back to the house, but it leaves Dr. Creed wondering what happened. Judd confesses that the burial ground has special powers, but that things that are brought back to life are never the same. He then tells Dr. Creed about his own experience with the burial ground.

The last major death in the movie is that of Dr. Creed’s young son,Gage. It is at this point in the movie that the Creed family aside from the daughter loses touch with reality. Dr. Creed is so consumed with grief that he exhumes, Gage’s body after the burial and takes him up to the burial ground, while his wife and  daughter are away. Judd has warned Dr. Creed that humans should not be buried in the burial ground because it simply isn’t right. Gage, comes back but he no longer has a sweet disposition but wants to kill everyone in sight. Dr. Creed kills Church once more and then when he realizes that Gage has become evil has to kill Gage again and sets fire to Judd’s house burning all the evil with it. Dr. Creed reasons that Gage turned evil because he waited too long to exhume his body and that it won’t be the same for his wife.  Well, let’s just say that there is a part 2 to this movie.

I had originally picked this movie because I thought the Edward Furlong, one of my childhood celebrity crushes was in it. He is not in this one, but he does play a part in Pet Semetary 2. The movie is good and left me scared right up until the end.  Even though some of the more bloody scenes you can tell are staged, the movie will still give you a good scare. Towards the end of the movie Gage reminded me a bit of the Chucky doll from the back. I will be back later on today with another movie review for you. I’m sorry that this is so late.

Scaretober-Movie Review: Teaching Mrs. Tingle

There will be a few days during this month that I will be putting up more than one posts, because sometimes you can’t hold any awesome back when it comes to the blog.

Today’s movie is Teaching Mrs. Tingle

Teaching Mrs. Tingle has an all-star cast that includes the likes of Helen Mirren, Katie Holmes, and Barry Watson. Leigh Ann played by Katie Holmes is from a single parent home in the middle of nowhere and is just out of reach of the valedictorian spot at her high school. At the beginning of the movie, Leigh Ann and her classmates are turning in their final projects for history class the final and only class that will determine their class ranking. Leigh Ann worked countless hours putting together a journal of a teenage girl that suffered through the Salem Witch trials. Mrs. Tingle the history teacher is unimpressed by this and claims that Leigh Ann has taken the easy way out. Then again Mrs. Tingle grades the whole class harshly even the student who reconstructed a crossbow ( more on this later). Leigh Ann and her best friend, Jo Lynn are doing extra credit work in the gym when Luke, Barry Watson, comes in and claims to have a copy of the History final exam. He gives it to Leigh Ann who then stuffs it in her bag just when they hear footsteps and run out. They are caught by none other than Mrs. TIngle who tries to turn Leigh Ann in to the principal’s office. Leigh Ann, Jo Lynn, and Luke decide to confront Mrs. Tingle that night at her home and the confrontation turns into a hostage situation when Jo Lynn accidentally hits Mrs. Tingle with the crossbow. The crazy journey continues through two days and ends with Mrs. TIngle shooting the crossbow at  another student while the principal is watching. Leigh Ann gets her wish of being valedictorian, giving the valedictorian speech and getting out of her small town.

I thought this movie would be much scarier than it appeared to me and because of it I feel like I owe you an extra movie during this month. I was barely even scared at all during the movie and thought it seemed very Dawson’s Creek with Katie Holmes character trying to get rid of her past and be the squeaky clean girl and Barry Watson being the ever helpful guy that finally gets the girl in the end. Sorry that this review is a little late it was just too late to finish last night. I will have another great review for you up tomorrow!

Scaretober-Movie Review: The Good Son

Today’s movie is The Good Son

Link

This movie stars Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin when they were both just starting out in Hollywood. The movie begins somewhere in what appears to be Arizona and Mark, Elijah Wood, ‘s mom has been in the hospital with a life threatening disease for sometime and dies just after Mark goes to see her for the last time. Mark’s dad is convinced by his brother that while he is away on a business trip to Japan that it would be a good idea to have Mark stay with his family in Maine. Mark meets his cousin Henry for the first time and he acts like they are already brothers, he then convinces him to have a bit of crazy fun. What Mark begins to find out is that his uncle’s family has also suffered the loss of his unknown cousin Richard. As Mark spends more time with Henry he begins to see how twisted his mind is and wonder how he has people so fooled. He worry for people grows after the car accident incident and even more after the skating pond incident with Henry’s own sister, Connie. When Mark tries to tell his aunt that Henry is responsible for these incidents she choses not to believe him. Later on, Henry’s mother begins to wonder what Henry has been up to all this time in the shed and goes to investigate and finds the rubber duck that Richard had when he died. When she confronts Henry at first he denies killing Richard and then is convinced that his mother is trying to put him away. Henry and his mother go for a walk later on and he admits to having killed Richard and then tries to kill her by throwing her off a cliff. Henry’s mother manages to climb back up the cliff and then has to pry both Henry and Mark apart from fighting. In the end she has to chose which child to save Henry or Mark. She choses Mark and the last scene of the movie is Mark staring out into the abyss of the Western horizon wondering if his aunt would make the same choice over again.

This movie is not classified as a horror movie but falls more into the thriller section. It scared me as a child and still scares me a bit now. It is strange to watch Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin as kids and perhaps even stranger to watch Macaulay in what I think is his darkest role to date.

If you have seen this movie do you think I classified this right under horror or would you have left it out of Scaretober? Also have you seen the movie Party Monster and do you think that should be reviewed for this series? Let me know. I apologize for this post being up so late, but I’ve been trying to write ahead and that hasn’t quite happened yet with this series. See you tomorrow for another thrilling post!

Scaretober-Movie Review:Scream

Today’s post will be about the movie Scream.

Link

This movie stars Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Matt Lillard, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette just to name a few celebrities. It is set what appears to be a sleepy East coast town of Woodboro in which it’s basically the countryside and the houses are super far apart. The first opening sequence of the movie is Casey,Drew Barrymore, at home getting ready for a night in, when she gets a call from a stranger that proceeds to ask her a bunch of questions. When Casey gets bored and annoyed with the conversation she hangs up. The caller calls Casey back several times before threatening Casey’s life. He then proceeds to play a game which both Casey and her football player boyfriend lose. In the next scene you see Billy,Skeet Ulrich, climbing through Sidney, Neve Campbell,’s window and them getting a bit frisky. The next day you at school you find out that Casey and her boyfriend were found brutally murdered the night before and that this is the week before a one year anniversary of Sidney’s mother’s brutal murder. To cut the summary short you find out that the creepy caller was actually Billy and Stuart playing ghost face the brutal murderer and a whole bunch of people die over the course of one night.

I was actually impressed that I was not that scared to watch this movie and barely even jumped. I was a bit grossed out during the movie especially during all the murder sequences. It was strange to see Drew Barrymore as a platinum blonde and bit weird to have her die in the first 5 minutes of the movie. Billy climbing through Sidney’s window twice in the movie reminded me of Dawson’s Creek era and I had nearly forgotten that Dawson’s Creek premiered around this time also. It’s crazy to see 2 different types of cell phones in the movie, the brick Courtney Cox’s character uses and the slimline Skeet Ulrich’s character uses.  It seems really odd in the movie that Sidney has to go home and check on the her house instead of going straight over to Tatum’s house after school that leaves her in the house for at least 4 hours by herself. Also something that I will need to remember in the rest of the series are the scary movie commandments that Randy lives by.

Let me know if you watched this movie when you were younger or have watched it recently. Also let me know if you have any suggestions for movies that I should watch during this month. See you tomorrow with another exciting post!

Battle Royale

Battle RoyaleBattle Royale by Koushun Takami, Yuji Oniki
on November 17, 2009
Pages: 610
Format: Paperback
Goodreads
five-stars

Koushun Takami's notorious high-octane thriller envisions a nightmare scenario: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian programme, they are provided arms and forced to kill until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violent exploitation when first published in Japan in 1999—where it became a runaway best seller and was adapted into a movie—Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world.

Why hello there. I’m sorry that I have not been here in a while I keep meaning to post here, but then my life gets crazy and I don’t post as much as I would like to and it disappoints me and I’m sure that it disappoints you as well.  Enough of my sad apologies though, I’m here today to talk about Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. I first heard about this book from my co-worker sometime in 2011 right about when the Hunger Games  was getting popular. I found finally found a republished translation of the book on my work trip to Sacramento last year. I finally got around to reading the novel this past Spring, I even watched the movie, which is available on Netflix for your viewing pleasure.

The novel all 576 pages keep me turning pages while reading it, although the brutality in the novel had me limiting my chapters to only one or two a night because let’s be honest I get nightmares easily and really like my sleep. I rooted for the main characters Shuya Nanahara and Noriko Nakagawa throughout the novel and their bittersweet love story. I loved that the book added more depth to all the characters and attempted to give insight to where some of the characters were coming from.

The movie as expected took some liberties as far as the novel goes. For example in the movie two of the students Shogo Kawada and Kazuo Kiriyama are said to be transfer students that join the class on the island, while in the novel these two students are part of the class that are also brought to the island on the bus. I love the scenery and the imagery in the movie. I should warn you though that the movie is done in Japanese with English subtitles. I appreciate that this movie had subtitles rather than English dubbing which can take away from the main elements of the movie.

I would definitely recommend both the book and the movie to anyone. If you liked the Hunger Games and enjoy distopian novels this is definitely a book for you. I also just found out this weekend that there was also a manga called Battle Royale, which I’m now on the hunt for because the person that recommended that said that the manga was slightly different than the novel.

I hope too see you soon!

This post went up on the blog yesterday, but here' This post went up on the blog yesterday, but here's a short synopsis with less words. Interesting book. Reads a bit like Birds of Prey the movie where Harley Quinn is narrating the story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars I also thought the sketchy style of art was an interesting twist as compared to the rest of the books. Would recommend although it feels like it could use a sequel 😉 #jamiereads #52books #bookblogger #bookstagram #❤️
