Movie Review: The Good Dinosaur

I know that you haven’t heard from me in a bit since I went on a week long blogging spree. I thought that I would come back with yet another movie review for you. Last night the Boy and I went to see The Good Dinosaur since Star Wars is taking over the world and I currently have no interest in seeing that at the moment. This movie had been on my list to watch, but if I had missed it I might have been okay with catching it on dvd or Netflix at a later date. This movie was Pixar’s second release for the year which is unusual for them.

The story line for this movie works off the premise of what would have happened if the asteroid that hit the earth millions of years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs had not hit at all. The movie flashes forward 100 years or so after the asteroid misses the earth and the dinosaurs are still around and doing human things. The movie mainly revolves around a brachiosaurus named Arlo. The movie shows Arlo’s father and mother doing chores on the farm and they soon become parents to 3 baby dinosaurs, Arlo, Libby, and Buck. Arlo is the runt of the litter and also an incredible fearful. In the movie, Arlo’s dad builds a tower to hold all the farm’s harvest through the winter and he puts his stamp on it. Arlo’s mom also gets to put her stamp on the tower. Arlo’s dad says that Arlo and his siblings can put their marks on the tower only once they have worked really hard. Soon Arlo’s brother and sister have their marks on the tower as well. Arlo gets really frustrated, but he just can’t get past his fear. Soon it is Fall and harvest is coming to an end, but when Arlo’s dad opens the tower he finds that someone has been stealing the harvest and asks Arlo to watch and kill whoever is stealing from them. Arlo captures the creature, but can’t bear to kill it. The creature runs away and Arlo insists that he and Arlo chase after the creature. In the midst of tracking down the creature Arlo gets hurt and then a storm comes in and Arlo’s dad gets washed away with the river. It’s been a bit since Arlo’s dad has passed and Arlo catches the creature eating the harvest again and this time he is determined to kill it. Arlo chases the creature and ends up getting washed down the river far away from his home. Arlo is determined to make it home before the first frost but along the way gets into some trouble including running into the creature again. Arlo eventually names the creature Spot and they form a strange bond.

I won’t give away the ending, but it is a Disney film so the ending isn’t totally bad. This movie was cute, but very predictable in a very Disney way. As much as I appreciated seeing the movie in theatres I definitely could have waited for Netflix or dvd to watch this and saved my money. Admittedly, Pixar does have some amazing films in their wheelhouse, but I really think on this film that they missed the mark a bit.

I hope to see you in another post soon, I hope.
